Faith

Like every Christmas, I attended the midnight mass at St. Xavier's Parish with a beautiful memory of the services and the singing of the carols and ever loving 'Silent Night...Holy Night' - It has been translated into many versions 193+ versions of Silent Night in 130 languages including the German version "Stille Nacht" (Find Here).

Christmas time and it's time to be Spiritual and spread love, faith, peace around. I find so amazing is, the holy silence as the sermons are being read at the church. There is a spiritual feel in the air as the baby Jesus is born and everything is so different that makes one believe in a super power 'God'. The carols were just filled with joyous expressions and as we sang along, every moment filled my life with radiance of peace and joy. This year, there seemed to be more presence of non christians and the christmas festival is being celebrated by everyone, whatever the faith. (find my note of last year) O Holy night by Celine Dion sung with spiritual zeal touched my heart to see the presentation with the Lord's world in its vivid picturesque scenes.

The St. Xavier's Parish Crucifix was ordered from "Liturgical Images" Bandra, Mumbai. Sister Vimla was instrumental in selecting the Crucifix. The Crucifix is unique in its attractiveness. It towers above the congregation and looks down upon the celebrant and the alter.

As you can see in the picture, the Alter was sculpted and designed by Mr. Rock and Mr. Ronald Sequiera well known sculptors and wood carvers from Bhasien. The frontal face of the alter depicts the Last Supper carved delicately in wood. The Lectern also designed and sculpted by them depicts the four apostles. The base of the alter and the Lectern are of sea green marble.

Well, like I say, "Faith is a light that dispels ignorance and darkness around. Faith is the hope that keeps you surfing on the waves on a sea of storms. Faith is love. Faith is grabbing the magical moments in life. Faith is deciding, daring, challenging and striving to reach the goals. Faith in whom we believe is intimacy & commitment to fulfill service towards mankind. Faith is trusting in tomorrow and dreaming God’s dream of a beautiful world with love, peace and joy to humanity."

May this Christmas radiate your life with god's light - love, peace and happiness.

Toast your life with 'Thanksgiving' - Never late!

Planning and this is here we fail sometimes when we often lag behind with short of time schedules! Teachers need to plan their lessons especially with the monthly event calendar. This is like sparing a few minutes in the classroom providing information - spreading awareness and significance of the event.

If you have missed the 'Thanksgiving' just like me, there is no missing the Event worksheets as they can be taught anytime within the event week.

Thank You comes in an amazing way to be fondly appreciated and who else can be so happy than parents or teachers when children bring in a creatively made note with the courtesy words 'Thank You'!

Teaching children to write 'Thank You' notes is teaching them simple social manners of expressing gratitude. Just as much as we value the experience of gesture when somebody writes a 'Thank You' note, children too can receive our 'Thank you' notes for their good behavior or any positive attitude. This can be the first step in teaching them to consider writing Thank You notes to others. Most of the children need to be encouraged to write Thank You notes, as a child will not initiate to write on his own. How often, we forget to send our 'Thank You' notes and especially, when the tradition of 'Thanksgiving' is completely not observed in many places like India. Sometimes, merely we say words. However, writing notes has its own charm and has an educational value when children learn to write them.

So, how do we help kids to write these lovely 'Thank You' notes? Maybe a few Thank you note guideline tips for kids might help.

Comics Project for Kids

Recently, I encouraged children to read a Comics in the classroom. They picked up Archies, Amar Chitra Katha picture books, Batman and few random comics that I have in my Library. Comic books are a great way for kids to get interested and excited about reading as well as helping to develop their imagination. But nothing can be more important for parents than to be sure that their children are reading age appropriate material. As a kid, we all love to read comics. But, which one is ok for children now? Here's my best picks in Amazon Listmania and sure, you'd love to read these comics too.

Btw, ever tried a Comic Project for Kids? Well, I remember helping kids to create comic strips with brainstorming sessions using Imaginations - with words and picture stickers. Here's some tips to help.

Vocabulary: Students can learn to get involved in communication and language structure.

Use of words: Help them to create Balloons to fill in simple words of addressing and expressions like hi, oh, ouch, hmm...etc.

Script : Talk to them about the picture sticker and help them imagine to create a script. The flow of the 3/4 panel story comes with their imaginative inputs.

Message: The message selection can be social or anything that can be humor too. Simple ways for beginners to express words.

Story Continuation: Encourage kids to write a story first. Then write dialogues. This may also ease the making of comic strip process.

Pairing : Pair the children in a group of 2 or 4. Make it fun session. Let them share comic books, jokes or quotes. Engage them in group discussions to warm up before writing.

Happy to Create Comics in simple way comes quite naturally when motivation follows to spark creative juices. Kids are at their best only when they are ready to Do It. Forcing them to engage in activities gain no results.

Btw, here is Toondoo, a great Comic creating tool online - Create, publish and share Comic strips. You can discuss and find Ideas to create comics. The site gives a chance to enter into Hall of Fame and take part in competitions too.

Another site I recommend is Bill Zimmerman's Comics which I referred earlier on the Comics Page. This site more enchanced to create comics online with Teacher Resources, Writing Prompts, Story Ideas and much more to explore.

Sun Signs and daily/weekly forecasts

Wondering, How many of you believe in Sun Sign and Daily Forecast/weekly forecast that appear online or in newspapers? Well, I do. You can't call it a belief but soothing the soul and concluding, compromising self and even finding ways on how to better life! All of us are not Perfect and neither do we follow the law of life at times. It's impossible. Rather, we are ebbing and flowing like the tide when we need solid mates and family to protect and nurture. The more sensitive you are in undercurrents of emotional environment, more confused you are. However, I guess, Marjorie Orr guides you with forecasts that do make you understand your current position of stars and why things do happen as they may be. It only depends on how we take our life to make it positive and shrugg off those negatives that enter our domains.

Well, confused? I did write Sun Signs in my 'Freesouls (Now Kidsfreesouls) print media which you can find alongwith influeced Cheiro's numerology reading. A great fan of Linda Goodman, I still recommed that you can subscribe to Marjorie Orr at Astrolife.com. Her readings are excellent and I have noticed they stand neutral, correct with suggestive measures too. After all, Marjorie Orr is one of the Top astrologer with over 25 years of experience.

Sesame street celebrating 40 years-Chamki spreading literacy

Google Doodle is today celebrating 40th Anniversary with the Muppet character logo. Sesame Street, an American Children’s TV Series, was launched on November 10, 1969. It is the longest running children’s program on US television. Sesame Street broadcasts in over 120 countries and 8 million viewers on 350 stations throughout the world.

The show celebrates its 40th birthday on November 10, 2009, the exact day the series debuted on TV four decades ago. US first lady Michelle Obama will appear on the Children’s TV show “Sesame Street” on the November 10th episode, to ostensibly kick off its 40th anniversary season. A section on the show will be telecasted to encourage children to adopt healthy eating habits and even plant vegetables in the garden.

Original songs, story lines and animations such as “Murray Had a Little Lamb,” “Word on the Street” and “Elmo’s World” will continue to stimulate the preschool viewers’ awareness and excitement about the environment. Additionally, new words will be introduced at the beginning of each episode by Murray as he interacts with people on the street. In a series of 26 hilarious celebrity segments, words such as “habitat,” “metamorphosis,” “camouflage,” “hibernate” and “garden” are introduced to enhance vocabulary and further highlight the wonders of nature.

Happy Halloween, Dev Diwali

Happy Dev Diwali! From today, Gods will celebrate Diwali for five days. However, 31st October being Halloween Day, its haunting of ghosts and werewolves and vampires like kali chaudas.

Mystyfying myths remain mysterious even though ultimate truths could be discovered using the human mind alone. Science has yet to reveal what caused them. Satanism, Blackmagic, tell tale, mythology and all, lead to beliefs of evil omens to exist on earth as Ghosts or demons or witches. It takes a fraction of a second to hear the sound ‘AUM’ at such times of spirit scare and take a walk outside the mind, moving from head to heart. We are all hung up in the head. One solution is get down from the head to the heart. Mysteries remain but problems disappear and evaporate leaving the trails of mysteries behind.

Nobel Prize for Peace

Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm on October 21, 1833 who became a famous scientist, inventor, businessman and founder of the Nobel Prizes. Alfred died in San Remo, Italy on December 10, 1896. In his last will and testament, he wrote that much of his fortune was to be used to give prizes to those who have done their best for humanity in the field of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. It took four years for his executors to convince all parties to follow Alfred's wishes.

That's how Nobel Prizes came to exist since 1901 when first Nobel Prizes were given in Stockholm, Sweden.

However, it is interesting to note How the Peace Prize was included by Alfred Nobel in his will.

Alfred had no family of his own. Once, he announced in the newspapers for a secretary. An Austrian lady, Bertha Kinsky von Chinic und Tettau got the job. After working for a short time, she moved back to Austria to marry Count Arthur von Suttner.

Alfred and Bertha von Suttner remained friends and exchanged letters through the years. She later became very active in the peace movement. She wrote the famous book "Lay Down Your Arms." When Alfred Nobel later wrote his will to establish the Nobel Prizes, he included a prize for persons or organizations who promoted peace.

Bloggers unite on the Web for a social event writing for cause - Climate Change. This December, World leaders will meet at Copenhagen (7-18 Dec) and bloggers unitedly will raise their voice by October 15, 2009 blogging on the web. Last year, 7083, 12000 blogs, reached 14 million people and this year, Blog Action Day, Powered by Change.org shares their ideas for Bloggers to Blog as Climate Change threatens more than Environment and human life is in danger with famine, flooding, war, refugees, etc.

Ideas to Blog by Blog Action:

* A Technology or Business blog might write about emerging clean tech and how innovative companies might be able to help address the problem of climate change.
* A Health or Lifestyle blog might write about how climate change will affect our children's health and daily living.
* A Nonprofit or Political blog might write about how climate change is deeply connected to many other issues - such as poverty and conflict.
* A Design blog might write about new trends in eco-friendly or sustainable design.
* A Travel blog might write about the places you want to see now before climate change makes them difficult to access or, well, under the sea.

Population, poverty and developing worlds - Co2 emissions - all pose a threat to Climate change. And, India – like other major developing countries – has been demanding that rich, industrialised countries pledge cuts of 25% to 40% in Copenhagen in December. Diplomats in Delhi say, that America and other developed countries had to commit to deep emissions cuts in the next decade – not by 2050 – if they wanted to see India and China take serious action to contain the rise in their future emissions, as their surging economies expand. Wolf Hall wins - Countdown ends!

History classes can now add Supplementary reading in classrooms with Man Booker Prize Announced. WOLF HALL by Hilary Mantel is the winner of this year's 'Man Booker Prize 2009' in England. Wolf Hall is the retelling of Thomas Cromwell's life - the blacksmith boy who became Henry VIII's right-hand man. Cromwell has been a genius and historians have admitted that he is the best administrator who changed medieval to modern nation state.

Here is a brief Product Description of Amazon:

'Lock Cromwell in a deep dungeon in the morning,' says Thomas More, 'and when you come back that night he'll be sitting on a plush cushion eating larks' tongues, and all the gaolers will owe him money.' Well, the book I understand, calls for a broad readership. It reached the libraries and the book shops even before it got into the long list of Man Booker Prize. It is expected that classrooms might add this book for reading.

History as a Fiction and I don't like the idea to even add this to Supplementary reading in classroom! Yesterday, a 11th class child informed me that he has five books for Supplementary reading this year apart from other assignments and comprehensions. This month, he has 'Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh' and I really pity students when they have to read such books especially during Diwali time when it's time to enjoy festive season.

Train to Pakistan is the story of this isolated village that is plunged into the abyss of religious hate. It is also the story of a Sikh boy and a Muslim girl whose love endured and transcends the ravages of war. A timeless narrative by Khushwant Singh. A documentary of Punjab, its people and culture.

Well, aren't our children overburdened with too much of knowing History?

The Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2009 was short listed and announced earlier in September. Six books were again short listed for the Final Prize winner.

These Fiction books are selected by the Judges as they are found to be narrative, great inventiveness, poetry and sharp human insight in abundance.

The winner of the 2009 Man Booker Prize for Fiction will be revealed on Tuesday 6 October 2009 (today) at a dinner at London's Guildhall and will be broadcast on BBC News across television, radio and online.

The winning author will receive £50,000 and can look forward to greatly increased sales and worldwide recognition. Each of the six shortlisted authors, including the winner, receives £2,500 and a designer bound edition of their own book.

The Man Booker Prize for Fiction 2008 winner was 'The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga' who won the 2008 prize. You can read the full news story here.

I feel, writing do not come so easy for children as writing fiction is an exercise of power of narration with plots and a good storyline. Children Fiction writing comes with dedication and children's book market can be difficult to crack for first time authors. It needs brainstorming sessions to plot the story line with rhyme and reason. Humor to combine and polish writing and editing skills. Writers also need to write great winning proposals, attend publishing conferences and we also need Agents! This is one important part and next is marketing. Yes, for all this - You need $$$ and depends on how far reach you can go to achieve success.

Well, writing a Children's book is one thing on my mind after my book 'Guardian of Angels: A practical guide to Joyful Parenting' hit Amazon.com list. As I explore on different plains writing for my Government, thoughts scale on a different note. Sometimes, we aim to rise high doing too many things at a time but we do have to understand our priorities and duty.

Banned Books: Read, Speak, Be Aware

Benjamin Franklin said: "Without Freedom of Thought, there can be no such Thing as Wisdom; and no such Thing as public Liberty, without Freedom of Speech."

September 26 to October 3, 2009 is Banned Books week. He feared the black children would be upset reading the book. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Folleth and from Oprah's Book Club is banned from High school English class due to rape scenes and explicit sex.

Interesting is a challenged book 'A Girl's Life Online' by Katherine Tarbox. A school in Baldwinsville in NY challenged this book because of graphics language. The cautionary tale about Internet safety is one of the five books students could select for the contemporary Literature class unit on teenage struggles.
